FRIDAY 14 NOVEMBER 8pm *Missa Unitatis, lower choir version*
Cappella Pratensis @ Jheronimus Bosch Art Centre, 's-Hertogenbosch, NL
SUNDAY 16 NOVEMBER morning *Missa Unitatis, upper choir version (extracts)*
Schola Cantorum @ Sint-Janskathedraal, 's-Hertogenbosch, NL
"The _Missa Unitatis_ is the first new mass setting to have been commissioned by the Illustre Lieve Vrouwe Broederschap (founded in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1318) in almost 500 years, and as such resonates strongly with the sound, aesthetic, and intention of its noble forebears. In the Zwanenbroedershuis in 's-Hertogenbosch there are nine large choirbooks commissioned by the Brotherhood in the 16th century: these books are perhaps the most important sacred musical heritage of the Low Countries.
The two choirs premiering the new work - the professional male-voice ensemble Cappella Pratensis directed by Stratton Bull, and the Schola Cantorum of Sint-Janskathedraal, 's-Hertogenbosch under Jeroen Felix - are different in size (8 voices, c.50 voices), in range (one a 4th higher than the other), and in function. Inspired by the Brotherhood's uniquely balanced membership - precisely as many Protestants as Roman Catholics (thus acknowledging the Church's need for unity while simultaneously exposing the present lack of it) - this 'Mass of Unity' is designed to be performed by two choirs separately and/or together. Somewhat in the tradition of Ockeghem's _Missa Prolationum_ and _Missa Cuiusvis toni_, the conceit is that there exists an invisible source - an original score - of which the two versions are radically different editions, thus playing with the tension between intention and interpretation, original and modern notation. The musical magic is that these two versions can also be sung together. The familiar Mediaeval/Renaissance proportion of 4:3 is invoked in many different ways, while the melodic cell of E, F, G, Bb, F, C permeates the music from start to finish. The composer's first full-scale Mass setting - the _Missa Exspectationis_, a parody-technique mass based on Henry Purcell's _Hear my prayer_ - was broadcast on Netherlands Radio in 1997."

AND FINALLY:
another poignant and topical echo from the past:
<<Thompson noted that one of the BBC's radio producers, Antony Pitts, resigned over our decision to show Springer. "Before he did so, he said to me sadly: 'this is such an opportunity, such a wasted opportunity, to turn back the tide'.">>

And thank you very much, as always, for listening,
